Minnesota Children's Museum Exhibit
Teaches Healthy Brushing Habits

The history of the toothbrush is the focus of a new, high-tech exhibit coming to the Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum, thanks in part to generous support from 3M ESPE Dental

Products and the 3M Foundation. ÒBranches, Bristles, and Batteries: Toothbrushes Through TimeÓ was developed at the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, Maryland, and is designed to educate children and families about the importance of oral health through its fun, interactive displays and activities.

The Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum was one of just nine museums nationwide chosen to host the traveling exhibit, which opened January 24 and runs through April 25.

ÒBranches, Bristles, and Batteries: Toothbrushes Through TimeÓ begins with a timeline that follows the evolution of the toothbrush from the first toothbrush made in China in 1498 out of wild boarÕs hair and sticks to the modern, battery-operated versions we use today. The colorful, three-dimensional timeline depicts historical world events such as the Civil War and manÕs first steps on the moon alongside toothbrush designs used at that time.

Other features of the exhibit include ÒFood for ThoughtÓ, an interactive activity that teaches children about healthy snack choices through food-shaped puzzle pieces visitors must fit into the correct spot, and ÒPlaque AttackersÓ, where visitors use an extra-large toothbrush to brush plaque off teeth in a giant mouth. The oversized mouth model illustrates the importance of brushing after meals and also allows children to practice proper brushing technique.

Additionally, at a CD-ROM learning station called ÒThe Essential ToothbrushÓ, children are guided through activities by Brushella the Tooth Fairy and create their own virtual toothbrush while learning how to store and care for their toothbrush at home. Museum visitors also can relax on toothbrush-shaped furniture, view vintage dental product posters, and find a favorite theme toothbrush on the ÒToothbrush TreeÓ.

ÒThis exhibit is an entertaining and hands-on way for children to learn about the importance of oral health care as part of their overall health and wellness, as well as practice proper dental care techniques,Ó explained Maureen Chapin, global business communications manager, 3M ESPE. ÒWeÕre honored to partner with the Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum to bring this exhibit to the community.Ó

ÒThe Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum is grateful to 3M for its generous support of this exhibit, which teaches children about oral health in a fun, interactive way,Ó stated Bette Schmit, director of exhibits, Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum.

ÒBranches, Bristles, and Batteries: Toothbrushes Through TimeÓ is included in the regular price of admission to the Minnesota ChildrenÕs Museum, which is located at Seventh and Wabasha Streets in downtown Saint Paul.
