Welcome to the Minnesota Dental Association

The Minnesota Dental Association is a statewide professional membership organization representing Minnesota-licensed dentists and dental students. Any dentist with a license to practice in Minnesota and any student enrolled in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is eligible for membership.  With a statewide membership of over 3,000 dentists, the MDA represents 83% of all licensed dentists in Minnesota.

The MDA was established in 1884 to ensure that patients received the highest quality of care from dental professionals.  Over the years the MDA has continued to be the voice of dentistry in Minnesota, committed to the highest standards of oral health and access to care for all Minnesotans.  The MDA represents its members at the state legislature, advocating for legislation that includes scope of practice issues, as well as public oral health and safety issues. In addition, the MDA represents members in discussions with regulatory agencies and third party payers to resolve conflicts and recommend change when needed.

The American Dental Association (ADA), based in Chicago, is the parent organization for the MDA and for all 50 state dental associations. The ADA provides continuing dental education, research and public information programs. The ADA represents dentistry through legislative efforts in national arenas and provides patient education materials concerning preventive dental care and public health.

The MDA is comprised of eight local District Dental Societies throughout Minnesota that provide continuing education, study, and service programs. Active membership begins at the district dental society level and extends to the state (MDA) and national (ADA) levels.
