News Notes - November-December 2008

The Editors:

Dr. Chester J. Schultz, Jr., best known to his friends as Jack, passed away October 20, 2008. Among many contributions Jack made to his profession, he served as Northwest Dentistry’s Executive Editor from 1992-1993.
Jack Schultz was a professor of operative dentistry at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry from 1979 to 1999. A retired captain in the U.S. Navy, he had served in the Navy Dental Corps from 1955 through 1979, including a tour in Viet Nam. During that time he was on the USS Forestall, surviving the fire aboard that ship in 1967, resulting in an early promotion to captain.

As for this journal, Jack was Executive Editor at a time in its evolution when the position went with chairing the Publications Committee. Kind, gentle, thoroughly professional, he gave whatever project he was involved in the same deep but unobtrusive attention, a quality which made him the perfect moderator among the personalities that sat around our table. He was very proud to have been a part of the new direction we created for the journal at that time. Our current Executive Editor Bill Stein remembers Jack very well: “Jack Schultz was a big reason Northwest Dentistry is the successful journal that it is today. A clinician of impeccable skill, Jack imparted his knowledge freely to a generation of dental students. He will be remembered as a man of great good humor and gentleness, and he will be greatly missed.”

Jack lived in Golden Valley with his wife of 54 years, Shirley. Northwest Dentistry and the Minnesota Dental Association extend their sympathies to Jack’s family and express their deepest appreciation for the contribution he made to the profession.
