We chose to close this volume of Northwest Dentistry with a new and telling event in the life of Moses.* From a child of four making his way in Nairobi’s deepest slum, Moses, now six, has arrived at that time-honored watershed moment we might take for granted as part of growing up:
Every weekday morning, Moses has to cross the street from his Uncle David’s house to go to school. But not by himself. An adult must be holding his hand. And in Moses’ new life, it isn’t just a given, it’s a rule.
So there you are, when off you go: Look both ways, stay safe, and don’t let go until you reach where you’re going.
May 2012 bring each of us such a journey.
