News Notes - September-October 2013

The Editors:
Ashley Goodmund, a Lake Superior College dental hygiene student (and now RDH), shared a laugh with a youngster at the college’s Give Kids a Smile event last February.

A warm front of generosity will cover the state Friday, February 7 and Saturday, February 8, 2014 as dentists restore smiles to the faces of thousands of low income children. The  Minnesota Dental Association invites you to join its annual charitable event “Give Kids a Smile”; registration begins Monday, October 7 at https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=1314227

For 12 years now, this annual program has served some of the state’s most at-need children close to home, whether that is in the inner city, suburbs, or rural countryside. Last year, 3,015 dental professionals — including 570 dentists — delivered free care to 6,136 children in 203 locations across the state.

Participants can choose to:
• Offer any number of free appointments at their clinics on one of the event dates (some clinics choose an alternative date). Patients are identified by coordinating with a local  social service agency or by listing the participating clinic with the United Way 2-1-1 referral list.
• Volunteer as individuals or join a team at another clinic.
• Take “Smile Factory” referrals (severe cases that need treatment beyond the initial appointment). This is often the preferred choice for specialists.
• Make a financial contribution to help offset costs incurred at other clinics.

If you have any questions about how to get involved with “Give Kids a Smile,” please call the MDA or send a message to gkas@mndental.org.
