Drs. Suzette Olson, left, and Cam-Tu Dalluge at the newly dedicated Shawna Ikola brushing station at the University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic.
To the Editors,
I am writing to share an update regarding the Dr. Shawna Ikola Memorial I first wrote about in the January-February 2013 West Central District report in Northwest Dentistry. Our class of 2001 was able to raise $5,000 in honor of Shawna, and a plaque was put up at the University of Minnesota pediatric dental clinic at 701 25th Avenue South. Approximately 50 of our 83 classmates made donations, making it possible for a children’s brushing station to be purchased to go alongside the plaque in memory of our dear friend. We all wish to thank Northwest Dentistry for presenting the original article and bringing Shawna’s story to the attention of the people who in turn made this memorial possible. A small ceremony on Friday, December 13, 2013, was attended by Shawna’s colleagues, friends, and family. Following the dedication, we celebrated her memory with stories, laughter, and some tears. Thank you again to Northwest Dentistry for making this possible.
