The Changing Faces of Membership… a Look at Generational Differences

MDA President Mike Perpich and Sarah Sladek get ready to work on association demographic trends.

Through a grant provided by the American Dental Association, the MDA was recently honored to have Ms. Sarah Sladek, a sought-after speaker on association demographic trends, address a task  force of 12 MDA leaders. Ms. Sladek, author of the book The End of Membership As We Know It, expertly led the group in looking at the generational differences among our membership, and  facilitated discussion exercises designed to get the group talking about relevant topics including: the MDA’s current membership climate, how association membership trends should be driving the  MDA, what MDA members value about their membership, and what the future needs to look like for the MDA. During the four-hour session, Ms. Sladek emphasized that the MDA needs to understand that each member’s wants and needs will be different and that we need to create a welcoming environment for all dentists, regardless of their practice type. The task force, in collaboration with the New  Dentist/Membership Committee, will take the ideas gathered from this meeting and explore strategies focused on providing relevancy to current and future MDA members.
