The sound you hear behind the happy cooing of the child in Dr. Chris Carroll’s lap on our cover is the rumble of another shifting paradigm. This time it is the crumbling of the old saw that says children should have their first dental exam at the age of three. In its place, a new initiative to implement the first-year oral exam, and it comes with an impressive groundswell of national professional organizations. The authors, both pediatric dentists, will escort you from the what and why of it to the how, and then some, in this issue and the next. So if you’re thinking, “Oh, baby,” all we can add is, “Welcome to the village.”
