G.V. Black, the “father of modern dentistry”, graces our cover this issue to help create the context for our cover feature on the evolution of “extension for prevention” in restorative dentistry. Impressive and imposing as he is, he nevertheless must share the cover with the current generation of practicing dentists, teachers, and students, who represent the continuous questioning and testing of how dentistry is practiced. All the tools at our disposal are only as useful or effective as the minds that direct them. To that end, our cover feature engages us in a discussion that includes the solid foundation upon which the changes and advances in its preventive philosophy have been built.
