As the numbers rise in the reporting of the diabetes epidemic we are now experiencing, understanding the care of the diabetic patient in the dental office is not only a given, but a priority. The oral  complications of, in particular, poorly or uncontrolled diabetes, including the bi-directional disease process of periodontal disease, are a significant management issue among this vulnerable group.  Whole-body health requires the attention of dentist, patient, and the entire health care team. Yes, it’s complicated, and yes, it is important. To quote our authors, “The three most important goals for  success in managing diabetes are education, education, and education”.
