Volunteers are the heart of a Mission of Mercy and Minnesota will rely on the generous help of more than 1,000 volunteer dentists, dental hygienists and assistants, lab technicians and other community volunteers during the four days.  Below are descriptions of the many roles we will need volunteers to play over the course of the four days in August.  Registration will be available in February of 2012.

Dental/Medical Professionals

Dentists:  Those with a dental degree and a current, unrestricted Minnesota dental license to work in the following areas: dental triage, local anesthesia, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry.  If you are currently licensed in a state other than Minnesota, please click here for more information regarding Temporary Licensure.

Hygienists:  Those with a dental hygiene degree and a current, unrestricted Minnesota dental hygienist license to work in the following areas: hygiene, sterilization, anesthesia, and radiology.

Dental Assistants:  Those who are registered as a dental assistant with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry to work in the following areas: dental triage, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, sterilization, and hygiene.

Students:  Dental, dental hygienist, dental assistant, dental therapist and medical students are needed for various non-clinical volunteer work.  We especially need bilingual students to work as translators.

X-Ray Technicians:  Individuals with appropriate training and experience to provide or assist with panoramic and intraoral x-rays.

Lab Technicians:  Individuals with appropriate training and experience to fabricate, construct, make, or repair oral prosthetics, including treatment partials.

Dental Equipment Maintenance:  Individuals with appropriate training and experience to set up, maintain, and tear down dental equipment.

Front Office Staff/Billing Clerks:  Computer-knowledgable people to register patients and track completed procedures.

LPN, RN, Nursing Students, Physician, Physician Assistants, and Nurse’s Aid:  To conduct a medical history and check blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

EMTs:  To be available with necessary equipment during treatment hours.

Pharmacist/Pharmacy Tech:  To fill prescribed pre-medication, antibiotics, and low-level pain medications.

Lay Volunteers

Volunteer Registration:  Greet and check in volunteers.

Patient Greeters:  Greet patients and explain how the program works; direct people where they need to go to make sure they are seen in first-come, first-served order.

Patient Records and Registration:  Work with a simple MOM software program to enter patient demographic data and print patient records.

Parking:  Direct incoming vehicles to appropriate parking lots or loading/unloading areas.

Patient Escorts:  Escort patients between various departments ensuring that no one is ever left alone on the clinic floor.

Interpreters:  Spanish, Somali, Sudanese and other interpreters will be needed in all departments.

Checkout:  Use a simple MOM software program to track completed procedures.

Hospitality:  Serve and clean-up food service areas for patients and volunteers.

"I will help anywhere":  Assist in various departments as needed.

Set-up:  Tables, chairs, dental units, supplies, signs, volunteer registration, food service, etc.  Thursday only.

Tear-down:  Disassemble equipment, pack equipment and supplies, inventory, general clean-up, etc.  Saturday evening and Sunday morning only.
