MINNESOTA DENTIST ASSUMES PRESIDENCY OF THE AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATIONDR. ROBERT BRANDJORD OF BURNSVILLE LEADS DENTAL PROFESSIONSt. Paul, MN - Robert M. Brandjord, D.D.S., who practices the dental specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Burnsville, Minnesota, has assumed the presidency of the American Dental Association. Dr. Brandjord will lead the 152,000-member organization's efforts to protect and improve the public's oral health and promote advances in dentistry.
Dr. Brandjord said at the top of his agenda is improvement of access to dental care for underserved patients. The widening disparity between what the government pays dentists to care for low income people and their needs is the biggest negative change he has observed in his 30 years of practice.
"Our challenge is motivating the political will of state legislatures and Congress to properly address barriers to access to dental care," said Brandjord. "Unfortunately, most states are trying to cut back financially. They face tight budgets and dental care is frequently eliminated or reduced when state budgets are being cut. Dentists cannot address this problem alone."
Minnesota dentists have taken a leadership role nationally in providing free dental care to children whose families cannot get proper care. The initiative, called
Give Kids a Smile, is an innovative program in which dentists open their practices and community clinics for two days a year to provide free care. More than 16,000 children have been treated for free.
Dr. Brandjord's hospital staff affiliations include having served as Department of Surgery Chief at Fairview Ridges Hospital, Burnsville. He has taught at the University of Minnesota Dental School (UMDS) in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a past president of the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA) and served as chairman of the MDA University Relations Committee and an Ad Hoc Committee on Health Care. He is also a past president of the Minnesota Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Brandjord and his wife Pamela reside in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

GIVE KIDS A SMILE FREE DENTAL CARE PROGRAM SUCCESSFUL IN MINNESOTASt. Paul –- The 3rd Annual Give Kids a Smile volunteer initiative which provided free dental care to children created new records in volunteer commitment and needed treatment throughout Minnesota. More than 6,000 children from low income families received free care from more than 1,500 volunteers.
The free care was provided Feb. 4 and 5 throughout Minnesota at more than 170 locations. Volunteer dentists provided care in private dental offices and at public clinics.
"I'd like to thank the entire community for pulling together to support this effort. It is so heartening to see so many volunteers helping children who need dental care," said President-Elect of the American Dental Association Dr. Robert Brandjord of Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Access to dental care is at a crisis point for low-income, vulnerable patients, especially children, senior citizens, the medically compromised and those with disabilities. The Minnesota Dental Association has made this issue a top priority.
Currently the government pays less than half of the average cost of what private patients pay for the same care. "Volunteer efforts are part of the solution but one day can't solve the problem," said Dr. Pat Foy, president of the Minnesota Dental Association whose practice is located in Minneapolis. "Lawmakers need to know that paying less than 50 cents on the dollar to treat public assistance patients is not saving money," Foy continued. The MDA is urging Minnesota lawmakers to fix the funding and administrative complexities of state public assistance programs for dental care.
At the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, 150 students teamed up with faculty and area dentists to treat nearly 200 children. "Students can learn first-hand what the gaps are in the system while we can also help to create a lifelong commitment to volunteerism," said Patrick Lloyd, dean of the dental school.
Joining the Minnesota Dental Association in the effort are 3M, Patterson Dental Supply, HealthPartners, United Way, and the Minnesota Dental Foundation.
