ROSEVILLE DENTIST RICHARD WIBERG ELECTED PRESIDENT OF MINNESOTA DENTAL ASSOCIATION
(Minneapolis, MN) - Dr. Richard Wiberg, D.D.S., who practices general dentistry in Roseville, has been elected president of the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA) at the annual House of Delegates meeting in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Dr. Wiberg has an established general dentistry practice at Lexington Dental and has committed himself to serving the dental profession throughout his career. In accepting his election Dr. Wiberg said, “This is an opportunity for which I am grateful and I thank you for this honor.”
Dr. Wiberg has led many important initiatives to advance the dental profession in Minnesota. Most recently, he has overseen the MDA’s move into a larger and updated office building. The newly constructed headquarters located in Minneapolis will become home for the MDA this Fall.
He also nurtured and helped grow the Donated Dental Services Program which provides free dental care to adults with special needs who cannot afford the care. Volunteer dentists and donated dental laboratories in Minnesota have provided more than one million dollars of care to people in need through this program. “I am very proud of the way many of our members have embraced this and other volunteer efforts to give back to their communities,” said Dr. Wiberg.
Dr. Wiberg graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1966. He and his wife Karen live in Mahtomedi.

GOVERNOR PAWLENTY APPOINTS TWO TO THE BOARD OF DENTISTRY
(Saint Paul) – Governor Tim Pawlenty today announced the reappointment of Linda Boyum and the appointment of Candace Mensing to the Board of Dentistry.
Linda Boyum, of Plymouth, has been a registered dental assistant in Minnesota since 1982. She currently serves as the Dental Assistant Student Services Director at Herzing College – Lakeland Medical Dental Academy Division in Crystal. Boyum also currently works as a clinical dental assistant at the Uptown Community Clinic in Minneapolis. She is a graduate of the Hennepin Technical College dental assistant program.
Boyum is a past president of the Minnesota Dental Assistants Association. She currently serves as member of Minnesota Educators of Dental Assistants. Boyum is appointed as the dental assistant member of the board and will serve a four-year term which ends January 4, 2010. She was first appointed to the board in 2002. Boyum served as president of the board in 2004 and 2005.
Dr. Candace Mensing, of Rochester, has been a licensed dentist in Minnesota since 1975. She currently practices pediatric dentistry at Dentistry for Children & Adolescents, Ltd., in Rochester. Mensing received D.D.S. and M.S.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Mensing is the past president of the Southeastern District Dental Society. She is a current member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists. Mensing is appointed as a dentist member of the Board and will serve a four-year term which ends January 4, 2010. She replaces Dr. Freeman Rosenblum on the board. The Board of Dentistry licenses dentists and dental hygienists, registers dental assistants, and establishes standards for continuing education. In addition, the board investigates complaints, and has the authority to revoke or suspend a license. The board consists of nine members appointed by the Governor.

MINNESOTA DENTISTS PROVIDE $1.4 MILLION IN FREE CARE TO CHILDREN IN NEED
Minnesota children in need received a record $1.4 million dollars in free care during the recently completed Give Kids a Smile program. Nearly 6,000 children received free care provided by more than 400 volunteer dentists at 206 locations throughout Minnesota.
The free care was provided February 3 and 4 as dental professionals teamed up with United Way 2-1-1, Head Start, social workers, community nurses, schools and other community groups to ensure that children throughout the state received the care they need. Information was made available in five languages and no financial eligibility requirements were imposed.
“Give Kids a Smile is meant to accomplish two things,” said Dr. James Zenk, president of the Minnesota Dental Association whose practice is located in Montevideo. “It helps children get the dental care they so desperately need and raises awareness that our children deserve a better health care system that addresses their dental health needs. Good oral health is integral to overall health.”
This was the 4th year that the Minnesota Dental Association has led the statewide outreach effort which has grown into one of the largest programs of free dental care in the United States.
Children under 18 received a broad array of care including 3,700 fluoride treatments and nearly 3,000 fillings. Unfortunately, the untreated decay in some children resulted in 400 tooth extractions.
Joining the Minnesota Dental Association in this outreach effort were 3M, Patterson Dental Supply, HealthPartners, United Way, and the Minnesota Dental Foundation. Sponsors helped to underwrite an ad campaign on WCCO-TV to spread the word about the free care.
Minnesota dentists donate millions of dollars in care each year to low-income patients of all ages through charity care in their private practices, at community clinics and through participation in projects like GKAS and Donated Dental Services, a partner program between the MDA and the state for providing oral health care to disabled, senior, poor and uninsured state residents. MONTEVIDEO DENTIST JAMES ZENK ELECTED PRESIDENT OF MINNESOTA DENTAL ASSOCIATION
SETS VISION TO EXPAND DENTAL ACCESS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
(Minneapolis, MN) - Dr. James Zenk, D.D.S., who practices general dentistry in Montevideo, has been elected president of the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA) and set his vision to help expand dental access in rural communities during his term.
Dr. Zenk began practicing dentistry in his home town of Montevideo in 1981. "I am thankful I have been able to raise my family and practice dentistry in a town where I know my patients as friends and neighbors." Zenk continued, "I hope I can pave the way for more young dentists to find a rewarding career in dentistry in rural Minnesota."
Dr. Zenk has been chairing a Rural Dental Workforce Solutions Task Force which is working in three areas to attract and retain dentists in rural Minnesota. They are to establish and maintain successful mentoring programs, to encourage students at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry to have educational experiences in rural Minnesota and to develop innovative community models of delivering care in rural Minnesota.
Zenk noted that many smaller communities currently have only one dentist and dentists often feel the pressure to postpone retirement so their community can continue to be served. One promising new program is an in-hospital dental program at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. The program will provide experience for dental students from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and expose them to the benefits of working in a more rural setting.
Dr. Zenk is also actively involved with the Minnesota Dental Association's outreach initiative to provide free dental care to children who would not otherwise receive that care. The Give Kids a Smile program helped an estimated 6,000 children received free dental care provided by Minnesota volunteer dental professionals.
Dr. Zenk graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He and his wife Sonja have three grown children.

(St. Paul, MN) – Thousands of children across the state of Minnesota will get much needed free dental care in February when volunteer dentists and other dental professionals donate their time and resources to provide free care during the 4th Annual Give Kids a Smile Day. Give Kids a Smile is a unique program coordinated and led by the Minnesota Dental Association. Free care will be provided on Friday, February 3 and Saturday, February 4 to children whose families cannot afford to pay for dental care.
The Minnesota Dental Association is committed to doing what it can to make quality care accessible to every child in Minnesota. The number of dental professionals donating their time has grown each year and it is expected that this year, more than 6,000 children will be seen statewide. Donated care will be provided at more than 180 locations. Joining the Minnesota Dental Association in this effort are 3M, Patterson Dental Supply, HealthPartners, United Way, and the Minnesota Dental Foundation.
People interested in scheduling an appointment for their child may now do so by calling United Way 211 (just dial 2-1-1) or the statewide toll-free number 1-800-543-7709. People can also go directly to the Minnesota Dental Association's web site to see a list of participating dentists in their area at www.mndental.org. Children must be under age 18 and can obtain check-ups, sealants, fluoride treatments, fillings or, in some cases, even more involved care.
