The Minnesota Dental Foundation and the Minnesota Dental Association are co-hosting the second-annual Mission of Mercy event in June, 2013 to provide free dental care to patients facing insurmountable barriers to care.
The Minnesota Mission of Mercy (MnMOM) goals:
Cash donations exceed $200,000 for dental equipment, supplies, pharmaceuticals and food. The Signature Sponsor is Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation. There are numerous other contributors of both cash and in-kind services and supplies.
Many organizations and individuals have made tax-deductible and in-kind donations to help cover the costs of the event, which are expected to total $225,000 for dental equipment, supplies, pharmaceuticals and food.
Dr. Alejandro Aguirre, 2013 MnMOM Chair
Dr. Alejandro Aguirre has been in practice in Plymouth, MN as an endodontist since 1997.
He is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry and received his certificate of Endodontics from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Dr. Aguirre is currently a member of the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, Minneapolis District Dental Society, American Society of Forensic Odontology, and American Association of Endodontists. He serves as a trustee for the MDA and is the chair of MnMOM 2013.
Dr. Steve Litton, Minnesota Dental Foundation President and 2013 MnMOM Donor Chair
Dr. Steve Litton is a retired orthodontist from Golden Valley, MN.
He has held many positions throughout his dental career, including various positions within the MDA, Minneapolis District Dental Society, American Association of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists, Minnesota Association of Orthodontists, Smiles Change Lives, Minneapolis Children's Medical Center, National Sjogren's Syndrome Association, and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Litton has also written numerous articles and presentations all through his career and is featured in many publications.
Though retired, Dr. Litton is still very active in organized dentistry. He is the Minnesota Dental Foundation president, Minnesota Mission of Mercy fundraising chair, a member of Smiles Change Lives/Virginia Brown Orthodontic Partnership, serves on the Smiles Change Lives National Board, a member and officer at the Upper Midwest Orthodontic Study Club, a member of the Senate All-University Honors Committee, School of Dentistry Alumni Society board member, and is the founder and chair of the U of M School of Dentistry Orthodontic Alumni Association.
Dr. Michael Flynn, 2013 MDA President
Dr. Michael Flynn is a general practice dentist in Lewiston, MN.
He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in Winona and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School Of Dentistry. He has served patients throughout Southeastern Minnesota for over 30 years and provides a full range of dental services, including orthodontia.
Dr. Flynn is actively involved in organized dentistry, having served as an officer for the Minnesota Dental Association and as a delegate to the American Dental Association. He is committed to increasing dental access for under-insured and underserved families in Minnesota. Dr. Flynn is actively involved in legislative affairs for the MDA and has served on multiple task forces for many dental related issues, including serving on the Minnesota Department of Health’s Oral Health Practitioner Work Group, established by the 2008 Minnesota Legislature.
Dr. John Lueth, 2013 MnMOM Local Chair
Dr. John Lueth is a general dentist in private practice in Bemidji, MN.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Concordia College in Moorhead and his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. In addition to being in private practice for the past 30 years, Dr. Lueth is a founding member and Board president of the Northern Dental Access Center, a public access clinic in Bemidji.
Dr. Lueth is actively involved in organized dentistry, including currently serving as a district trustee to the Minnesota Dental Association and secretary-treasurer of the Headwaters Dental Society local dental study club. He is past president of the Northwestern District Dental Society and a former chair of the MDA’s Dental Education and Rural Health Care Committees.
Among others, Dr. Lueth’s community involvement includes serving on the Northwest Technical College-Bemidji Foundation Board, the Bemidji JayCees, and the Bemidji Area Head Start and Community Health Advisory Committees.
Dr. Roger Sjulson, 2013 MnMOM Local Co-Chair
Dr. Roger Sjulson is currently a general dentist in private practice in Fosston, MN.
He is past president of the Northwestern District Dental Society and past trustee to the MDA. Dr. Sjulson is currently secretary/treasurer of the Northwestern District Dental Society. He also serves on the MINDENPAC committee.
His community service includes: past president of the Rotary Club of Fosston, chairman of the board of East Polk County Development Achievement Center, chairman of the board of the Olson Memorial Fund Committee and president of the Rosehill Cemetery Board.
Dr. Sjulson has volunteered at three other Mission of Mercy events throughout the Midwest.
Dr. Doug Williams, 2013 MnMOM Local Co-Chair
Dr. Doug Williams is a general dentist in private practice in Bemidji, MN.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and has owned a dental practice in Bemidji for 30 years. He is committed to providing the Bemidji area with the most comprehensive and advanced dental care through continuing education on new dental methods and procedures.
Dr. Williams is an active member of the Northwestern District Dental Society, having served as its President and as a delegate to the MDA House of Delegates. He is also a current member of the MDA Legislative Affairs Committee, working to improve the oral health of Minnesota residents, especially those facing barriers to care due to underfunded public programs.
