Planning is well underway at more than 150 Minnesota dental clinics as they get ready to host Give Kids a Smile events on Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6. In all, they will provide free dental care to more than 6,000 low-income children. Unfortunately, many of those children will have staggering untreated dental disease.
Please consider joining them as volunteers in the MDA’s annual charitable outreach event, as a hosting clinic, individual volunteer or financial supporter. Using a new online registration process it takes only a few minutes to sign up. Working together, volunteers make a big impact - not only on the lives of low-income children, but also in the minds of legislators and the public in respect to the necessity of healthier dental policy.
If you have questions about how to get involved, please contact the MDA or read more online.
Thank you to the 2,300 volunteers who have signed up so far!
If your clinic wants to participate in Give Kids a Smile but isn’t able to host a clinic, please consider the Smile Factory option. This volunteer opportunity allows specialists, as well as general dentists, to provide additional treatment to children who need extra help after Give Kids a Smile. For example, while treating a child at a Give Kids a Smile event, a dentist may find the child needs a root canal or a complex extraction. The dentist would then look at the MDA’s list of Smile Factory locations and refer that child on to a participating endodontic or oral surgery clinic. The Smile Factory location would schedule the child for a future date and provide care at no cost. This extension of the Give Kids a Smile program is a great way to volunteer, at a time that’s convenient for you and your staff.
Our generous sponsors
The MDA is proud to announce that HealthPartners and 3M ESPE Dental Products have again joined us as sponsors. These generous companies, who have supported Give Kids a Smile for eight years, will provide funding needed to promote the program with advertising on WCCO-TV and on radio stations throughout the state. The ads encourage families in need to make an appointment for Give Kids a Smile. This year’s WCCO-TV ads will feature Amelia Santaniello and Frank Vascellaro. Watch for them starting in mid-January.
Please join the MDA in thanking these sponsors for their commitment to dentists’ charitable efforts and for helping us spread the word to families who lack access to dental services.
Support from your Foundation
Each year, the Minnesota Dental Foundation provides grants to help offset costs of dental supplies needed by community-based clinics that host Give Kids a Smile events. Many of those clinics say they would not be able to participate without the Foundation’s support. Thank you!
