Do you talk to your patients about tobacco cessation? Studies have shown that oral health professionals can be very effective in helping their patients stop using tobacco. The Minnesota Dental Association offers resources online for dental offices wishing to assist patients with quitting tobacco use.
The Tobacco Cessation Program section on the website includes various materials to help patients including: educational materials, procedures for conducting an in-office tobacco cessation intervention, information about the Minnesota Clinic Fax Referral Program (also called Quitlines), and other quit tobacco use programs.
The MN Clinic Fax Referral Program is supported by Call It Quits, a collaboration among seven of Minnesota’s major health plans. The program is designed to provide patients with a personal coach as a resource to support quitting. Once the patient signs a consent form in the dental office, the form is faxed to the triage center and the patient is contacted by a Quitlines coach. A starter kit of materials is available from the Minnesota Tobacco Quitlines program and includes patient consent forms, patient flyers, clinician fact sheets and an office poster. All materials are free of charge.
