“defense against the dark arts – protection from the evils of the internet”
Wednesday, May 20, 2026
As your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, it is my job to prepare you to defend yourself against all aspects of the Dark Arts, including phishing and evil trolls called hackers. Putting the Harry Potter references aside – you personally are the target of hackers, and this course applies to all of us at a Practice. The baddies are trying to steal your credentials by tricking you into doing things like clicking links, providing your logins, all in the hope it will enable them to breach your bank accounts or devices to do even more harm.
The purpose of this course is to empower you with the spells to defend yourself. You don’t need magical powers and a wand to fend them off. I will share interesting examples of how they attempt to trick you, and the generally simple and free ways you can avoid the threat by just modifying your behavior. You’ll leave the session already better prepared.
Cybersecurity risks emerge and change frequently, so my course will cover the most meaningful current topics of the time. They are likely to include:
- Social Engineering attacks – how they tailor a phishing attack to you personally to maximize the chance you’ll fall for it.
- Password management – how to move from using Post-it Notes, documents in your phone or a spreadsheet to a proper encrypted app.
- Defenses for your phone – steps you can take to minimize the risks on your Smartphones.
- and more…
I promise to limit the Geek Speak and talk about issues in a way we can all understand and share. Please bring your own questions and experiences to share, I love to engage with the audience and hear what’s concerning you.
