Overview:
This lecture provides an in-depth overview of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions, focusing on clinical recognition, etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis. The lecture emphasizes critical thinking skills required to distinguish normal anatomical variants from pathological states through case-based learning and focuses on describing lesions, formulating differential diagnoses, and understanding the role of biopsy and laboratory testing in definitive diagnosis.
Education Goals
- Identify potentially malignant disorders and determine a management approach
- Discuss common oral lesions affecting the oral cavity
- Discuss how ulcerative lesions can manifest in the oral cavity
- Recognize when biopsy is needed and how to determine best location and transfer medium to provide accurate diagnosis
- Practice hands-on biopsy techniques
