“Management of Common Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office”

Speaker: Nelson Rhodus, DMD, MPH

Many systemic diseases and therapies have a profound impact upon dental treatment. In addition, some of the therapies used to treat these conditions have significant effects on the patient’s medical status. For those reasons, it is important for dentists (and dental health care professionals) to know about their patient’s medical conditions before treating them and to understand the risks of providing dental care. In some cases, a medical emergency may arise and it is important for the modern dentist to first try to avert an emergency, recognize early the onset of an emergency situation and know what to do to manage such an emergency. This lecture will present an overview/update of the principles of the management of common medical emergencies in dental patients.

About the Speaker
Nelson L, Rhodus, DMD, MPH, is a Morse Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis, and Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is also an adjunct professor of otolaryngology at the Medical School and an adjunct professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health. For over 38 years, Dr. Rhodus has been active in basic and clinical research, publishing over 380 refereed scientific papers and abstracts. Dr. Rhodus is an editor of the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology. He co-authors two textbooks: Dental Management of the Medically Compromised Patient (tenth edition) and Orofacial Disorders.

“Team and Patient Communication”

Speaker: Kimberly Radke, LDA Emeritus

Great dentistry doesn’t happen in silos — it happens when every team member shows up confident, connected, and communicating at their best. This session is built for the people who make practices run: the hygienists, assistants, and dentists who interact with patients every single day. We’ll dig into the art of patient communication, explore what true inter-team collaboration looks like in action, and unpack the power of clinical calibration to get everyone aligned and rowing in the same direction. You’ll also discover your role in team co-diagnosis — because treatment acceptance isn’t just a doctor conversation. And we’ll close out with one of the most practical and fun segments of the day: real “what do you say when…” scenarios, tackled together in a live brainstorm format. You’ll walk away with real words, real confidence, and a fresh perspective on the impact you make.

About the Speaker
With over 35 years of comprehensive experience in the dental industry, Kimberly Radke is a dedicated dental consultant for Advanced Practice Management with a deep understanding of every facet of dental operations. As a former licensed dental assistant, front desk insurance processor, dental office manager, and departmental dental clinic manager at the University of Minnesota, Kimberly has a proven track record of leading teams to success.
